This month’s rose of the month is the ever popular rugosa rose, Roseraie de L’Hay.
The Wonders of Foliar Feeding
Today, some of the worst problems any rose grower can face, be they novices or experts, are diseases. These come in the form of such horrors as Black Spot, Powdery Mildew, Downy Mildew, Rust amongst others. The only foolproof way to keep these monsters away from your garden is simple, have no plants.
However, a garden without plants looks rather bare, so of course, this simply isn’t an option. So what can we, as gardeners, do to combat the growing problem of disease?
Of course, the answer most people come to is spraying with fungicides and pesticides to keep back the waves of disease and pests. However, at the Country Garden Plant Centre, we have found that Foliar Feeding is a much better way of keeping our roses looking beautiful and healthy all year around.
We used to spray our nursery of 30,000 roses at least once a week with fungicides to keep black spot and rust away, but nothing we did could keep downy mildew at bay. After reading an article somewhere about a man who used foliar feeding on his large garden at home, we decided to give it a shot.
We began Foliar Feeding in 2012, as soon as the leaves started to show on our roses. Since then, we feed them regularly through the growing season. Since we began foliar feeding, we’ve seen a huge dip in the number of roses suffering from downy and powdery mildew, and the amount of roses to suffer with rust and black spot through the season is less than half of what it was before.
Foliar Feeding is what keeps our roses looking strong and healthy throughout the year, so if it can do wonders with our roses, why not try it with yours?
Blue For You – Rose of the Month
A stunning floribunda with an abundance of blue through to mauve blooms in clusters.
The colourful blooms have a paler centre adorned with attractive golden stamens.
The bush can get a little untidy if the spent blooms are not removed regularly. Once the spent blooms are removed the repeat is as quick as any other floribunda.
There have been few blue roses produced in recent years, and even fewer good strong growing blue roses, but this is definitely one of them, and one of our favourites here on the nursery.
Rose of the Week – York Minster
Beautiful creamy/white blooms tinged with amber. Repeat flowers from early summer right through until autumn.
Reportedly a very healthy rose with good disease resistance.
A sweet and pleasant perfume.
The York Minster Rose was launched at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011 with a presentation to HRH The Duke of York and Princess Beatrice. The rose also featured in the 2011 award-winning Welcome to Yorkshire garden, The Art of Yorkshire. The rose was developed by Harkness roses and funds raised from sales will help to restore and preserve York Minster for future generations.

POSH BIRD HOUSE FOR POSH BIRDS
Our new range of Posh Bird houses have bea huge success, so much so that we have doubled out stock and varieties
They obviously went down very well as Christmas gifts as we almost sold just before Christmas. However the factory turned up trumps and we did not have to let anyone down.
Apart from being very decorative and beautifully finished in they also bring more birds into the garden which means less green fly and troublesome insects on the roses.
Some people hvave even put them on their window ledges nd are able to see the new inhabitants from the comfort of their sof’as. All in all, a resounding success and a great boon to the garden and gardeners.
Rose Cuttings Grown On their own roots
This year we are growing lots of New Rose Cuttings grown on their own roots.
Advantages of Own-Root Roses
Own-root roses have increased vigor and bloom plus higher disease resistance. Also eliminates complicated pruning. Instead just sheer back to promote more foliage and blooms.
Own-root roses have longer life expectancy.
In cold climates, roses on their own roots tend to be not only hardier, but also to remain true to the original variety should they die back in winter. The bud union of a grafted rose is the most vulnerable spot to cold and it can be easily damaged in a cold winter. In contrast, own root roses can freeze all the way to the ground and because they have their own root system, they come back as the same rose originally purchased.
Own-root roses naturally send up shoots from the soil, which eventually creates a shapelier bush than a grafted rose, plus more flowers.
Decreased likelihood of rootstock suckers.
The elimination of grafting guarantees that your roses will always be the same rose you selected when it was purchased. If you’ve ever had a beautiful yellow rose turn red or white, you know what we’re talking about!
In the early stages they are smalle and cheaper to post or deliver due to being a lot lighter in weight.
At the moment we are only producing The old fashioned Shrub roses and selected climbers
